India's first bloodless kidney transplant successfully done at Moolchand
Moolchand Medcity, New Delhi, May 12, 2011
A first of its kind bloodless kidney transplant surgery has been successfully done at Moolchand Hospital, New Delhi, India on May 3. With this, Moolchand has set a new benchmark in organ transplantation. A dedicated team led by Dr. Ramesh Kumar, Senior Consultant and Advisor in Nephrology and Transplantation, Dr. H S Bhatyal, Senior Transplant Surgeon and Dr. Vijay Langer, Senior Consultant, Anesthesiologist has accomplished this feat with improvisation and innovation in healthcare with no blood products. All major surgeries as open heart surgery, kidney transplantation and brain operations integrally require blood transfusions during operative procedures. The requirement of blood during such procedures is a prerequisite component. Our team of eminent super-specialists took up the challenge and did this bloodless kidney transplant surgery for the first time in India with no blood loss and transfusion.
At Moolchand, we provide world-class quality standards and respect everyone's beliefs as well. Jehovah's Witnesses, a Christian sect seek out quality healthcare and accept the vast majority of medical treatments. However, for Bible-based religious reasons, Jehovah's Witnesses do not accept blood transfusion, they request non-blood alternatives. With hemoglobin as low as 30% of the normal, that is 4.2 Hb in this case, the any operative procedure was not only nearly impossible for anesthesia and any major surgical procedure which in itself was an increased danger for a major surgical procedure like transplantation. A planned surgery where the lives of two person; one is a recipient of a live organ and the other is a normal healthy person donating an essential organ; the task was double-edged for any failure of the outcome.
Dr. Ramesh Kumar, Senior Consultant and Advisor in Nephrology and Transplantation, Moolchand Renalcare & Dialysis says, "We respect their religious values with ethics and provide medical care of high standards. After the transplant, both the donor and the recipient are fine and stable, can now lead a normal life and will be discharged in 2-3 days. This bloodless surgery provides: shorter hospital stay, cost-effective treatment, does not require special equipment, eliminate adverse effects, lower infection rates and minimize immunosuppression, etc. and can turn to be a miracle for the patients seeking kidney transplant."
